ICFM flexible learning
We encourage all participants on the Introductory and Intermediate Programmes to choose either the ‘Online’ or ‘Key Start’ classroom options for the former and the ‘Fast Track’ classroom option for the latter in order to get the most out of the respective programmes.
However, both the Introductory and Intermediate Programmes are available in a flexible learning format. Distance learning is where the trainee is physically ‘distanced’ from the trainer. The individual modules are available in either paper or CD-ROM formats. The Introductory Programme is also available Online which, of course, is also a form of distance learning.
This method of learning, while very flexible in terms of deciding when learning actually takes place, i.e. time of study sessions, does call for a high degree of self-discipline on behalf of the trainee to avoid situations where participants leave too big a gap in their learning process and consequently, either ‘lose the thread’ or, even worse, lose interest due to not having anyone physically present to provide motivation or encouragement.
Fleet specialists considering this method therefore should consider the advantages, i.e. lower costs compared to tutor-led learning and flexibility of study, against the potential pitfalls, e.g. those highlighted above.
Often the most successful formula for people learning via distance learning is for them to find a ‘sponsor’ – perhaps their line manager, a colleague, an in-company training specialist, or an HR manager. The sponsor can sometimes act as coach, a ‘sounding board’, reviewer or simply a motivator.
